FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What does the local Red cross do besides blood mobiles?
The Southern Alleghenies Chapter responds to every house fire in the counties we serve, offering support to the fire victims and emergency responders.  Fire victims may receive overnight accommodations in local motels and vouchers for food, clothing, medications and other emergency essentials, all paid for by the Red Cross.  Emergency responders receive hot and cold beverages and nourishing snacks while on the disaster scene.  The Red Cross is a leader in disaster preparedness education and training, offering classes in CPR/AED, First Aid, Emergency Response, Babysitting, Water Safety and Lifeguarding, Wilderness Training, and Family and Business Emergency Planning.  We are also a major link between local family members and military service members stationed around the world, assisting with emergency communications and financial support.

2. Where does the money come from to pay for the services you provide locally?
The Red Cross relies on public support from individuals, businesses, organizations, and foundations to meet public needs. Just as the local community relies on the Red Cross to aid them when they are most vulnerable, the Red Cross looks for the support of the community to assist those who have local needs.

4. What is the most common misconception about the Red Cross?

Because the Red Cross is a congressionally chartered organization, it is assumed that we receive government funding to provide services. The Red Cross is a private organization with public responsibilities, but does not receive financial support from the government.

5. How can someone help the local Red Cross?

There are so many ways you can help! Contact our office by phone or email or stop in to see the variety of opportunities for involvement. Whether you choose to become a volunteer, a donor or a supporter, there is a place for you at the Red Cross. We invite you to get to know us, and find out what you can do to help us make all the counties we serve safer, stronger, more resilient places to live.
